Wildfire-Resistant (Class A) Roofing: what to know in California
Most homes lost in a California wildfire are not consumed by a moving flame front. They are ignited by wind-borne embers that land on or under the roof, drift into an attic vent, or lodge in the open end of a barrel tile, often hours after the fire itself has passed. The roof is the largest ember-catching surface on the building, which is why California regulates it more tightly than any other assembly.
What Class A means
Class A is the highest fire-resistance rating for a roof covering assembly under ASTM E108 / UL 790, tested against flame spread, intermittent flame and burning brand exposure. Critically, the rating belongs to the assembly, covering plus underlayment plus deck, not to the visible material alone. A Class A tile over the wrong underlayment is not a Class A roof, and manufacturers publish the specific assembly combinations that earn the rating.
Chapter 7A is where the detail lives
California Building Code Chapter 7A and California Residential Code R337 apply to new construction and, in most jurisdictions, to substantial reroofing in a Wildland-Urban Interface area, a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone or a State Responsibility Area. The requirements that decide real outcomes are not the material choice, they are the detailing:
- Ends of barrel and profile tile blocked at eaves, ridges and hips so embers cannot enter the space beneath.
- Valleys with noncombustible metal flashing over the underlayment.
- Attic and eave vents screened with corrosion-resistant mesh no coarser than 1/8 inch, with vents prohibited in some eave and cornice locations.
- Noncombustible gutter and gutter-cover detailing, and gutters kept clear of debris.
- Skylights, roof-to-wall transitions and penetrations detailed so there is no path for embers under the covering.
Insurance is the practical driver
In much of California the question is no longer premium, it is availability. Carriers and the state's Safer from Wildfires framework recognise Class A roofing and ember-resistant vents as mitigation, and documented upgrades can matter for insurability and for FAIR Plan alternatives. Ask your carrier what evidence they want, product listings, permit and final inspection records, photographs, before the work begins, and keep it all.
Verify who you hire
Post-fire areas attract unlicensed operators, and California treats contractor fraud in a declared disaster area as a felony. Check the C-39 licence at cslb.ca.gov and confirm the licence name matches the contract name.
