Composition Shingle Roofing: what to know in California

Composition shingle covers most post-war tract housing in California and remains the default choice for cost, speed and repairability. Its enemies here are specific: relentless UV, which drives off the volatile oils in the asphalt and leaves the mat brittle; sharp day-to-night thermal cycling, which fatigues every fastener and seal; and Santa Ana wind events, which find every tab that never sealed properly in the first place.

Architectural versus three-tab

Three-tab is thinner, flatter and cheaper, with lower wind ratings and shorter warranties. Architectural (dimensional, laminate) shingle is heavier, carries higher wind ratings, hides deck irregularities better and generally lasts longer for a modest cost increase. In a wind-exposed part of California, the passes, the foothills, the high desert, the wind rating and the fastening schedule matter more than the brand.

The fastening schedule is where roofs are won or lost

Most shingle failures in California are attachment failures, not material failures. Ask specifically: how many nails per shingle, where they are placed relative to the nail line, whether the starter course and hip-and-ridge are the manufacturer's matched components, and whether the manufacturer's high-wind installation instructions are being followed. A high wind rating on the wrapper means nothing if the shingle is installed with four nails when the enhanced schedule calls for six.

Cool-roof shingles and Title 24

California's energy code sets minimum aged solar reflectance and thermal emittance for most residential reroofs. Cool-roof rated shingles are widely available in normal colours, and in the hot inland climate zones they measurably lower attic temperature, which also slows the ageing of the shingle itself. Ask for the Cool Roof Rating Council listing for the exact product, not a general assurance.

Ventilation

Attic ventilation is part of the roof system, and inadequate ventilation cooks a shingle roof from below. If a reroof quote does not mention ventilation at all, ask why. In wildfire-prone areas the answer has to reconcile ventilation with Chapter 7A, which requires corrosion-resistant mesh no coarser than 1/8 inch and restricts vents in eaves and cornices.
